201-896-4100 info@sh-law.comRoughly 20 of Major League Baseball’s most popular athletes may face suspension as a result of their connection to an ongoing investigation over doping allegations, according to ESPN’s “Outside the Lines.”
The MLB announced the possibility of suspending several players, including former MVPs Alex Rodriguez and Ryan Braun, who have been tied to Miami clinic Biogenesis of America, which is currently under investigation for allegedly providing banned substances to athletes. Tony Bosch, founder of the company, has agreed to cooperate with the League’s investigation after months of trying to circumvent the case. As a result, he may be compelled to release the names and details surrounding athletes who attended the clinic and purchase medications. The suspension may occur in as early as two weeks and remain in place for up to 100 games.
Some MLB players are also making declarations that their names will not appear on the list, including Red Sox heavy hitter David Ortiz, who in 2009 was listed among roughly 100 players to test positive for performance enhancing drugs during 2003 survey testing.
“I have no comment on that,” Ortiz told the Boston Globe. “Whatever happens happens. MLB will do their investigation and we’ll see how it goes. You don’t want to see anybody getting suspended, but we have rules and we have to follow them.”
Other players who may face suspension include Rangers outfielder Nelson Cruz, Yankees catcher Francisco Cervelli, Tigers shortstop Jhonny Peralta, and Padres outfielder Everth Cabrera. Ryan Braun failed a drug test in 2011, but his suspension was overturned. After facing questions about his potential suspension, Braun told the press that he would no longer comment on the investigation.
ESPN notes that if all of the players who are suspected of sports law violations are suspended, it would be the largest suspension in American sports history.
