“People are so angry and so poor,” Nikolis Geniatakis, a restaurant owner Archanes, Greece, told The New York Times after observing tax collectors visiting neighboring restaurants in search of receipts and financial records. “What were the tax inspectors doing here? Why aren’t they going after the big fish?”
Among the major concerns for Greek residents is whether or not the country’s newly enacted tax laws have allowed authorities to reduce the amount of tax evasion and recoup lost funds.
Over recent years, Greek residents have sustained increases in taxation and social security contribution deductions. In a report by the European Commission on the European labor market, researchers revealed that, in 2012, the total tax on salaries for Greeks grew by 7.2 percent, which was the highest in the eurozone, ekathimerini reported.
