201-896-4100 dscarinci@sh-law.comNew York, NY, June 10, 2014 – Anthony R. Caruso, Esq., partner and chair of the Sports, Media & Entertainment Law Group of Scarinci Hollenbeck LLC, appeared Monday, June 9, 2014, on the Morning Show for PIX Channel 11 TV/CNN with former college player Frank Corbett in New York City. Mr. Caruso discussed the legal impact of a lawsuit filed by a former college basketball player seeking to end the NCAA’s control over the rights to college athletes’ names, images, and likenesses.
As it stands, college athletes whose talent makes universities millions cannot profit from their own images outside of scholarships given to them by their schools. Former UCLA basketball forward Ed O’Bannon’s lawsuit aims to change that. Sports attorney Anthony Caruso visited the PIX11 Morning News on Monday to examine what the litigation means for the young athletes analyzing whether or not they can profit from their own image. Mr. Caruso commented that “There is going to be some kind of benefit back to the players, whether it is this lawsuit or the many others.” Caruso continued, “The NCAA model is under challenge right now, and it probably will be revised. If this case is even won a little bit, it will open up new ideas and new concepts.” To view the entire WPIX11 televised interview please see below or use this link: http://pix11.com/2014/06/09/ncaa-suit-seeks-profit-potential-for-players/.
Anthony R. Caruso is uniquely positioned to comment on such a high profile case, due to his extensive experience in entertainment controversies. As a prominent sports, media, & entertainment attorney based in the New York City / New Jersey area, he previously gained international attention in his representation of Miss New Jersey 2007 regarding a blackmail situation over Internet photos. Mr. Caruso provided all legal counseling and negotiations, strategy, media supervision, and crisis management in that case.
He is often asked by national television and radio broadcasts — including NBC, FOX, MSNBC and E! News — to offer his legal insight into sports and entertainment issues. Recently, Mr. Caruso has discussed the Donald Sterling situation, concussion concerns in the NFL, contract re-negotiations for talented rookie athletes, and Major League Baseball’s arbitration decision involving New York Yankee slugger Alex Rodriguez. He has also provided legal analysis for entertainment issues, for example, the recent Justin Bieber incidents. Mr. Caruso is a Partner of the Law Offices of Scarinci Hollenbeck and Chairs their Sports, Media and Entertainment Law Group. He also currently serves on the adjunct faculty at NYU, where he teaches sports and entertainment related courses.
