NFLPA Announces Agreement With Electronic Signature Solutions Company

In the wake of the Elvis Dumervil contract fax mishap, the National Football League Players Association has found a solution to ease players’ fears that key paperwork won’t be submitted in time. The NFLPA announced a deal with electronic signature solutions company DocuSign, which will allow draft picks and current players to submit sports contracts and amendments to the league quickly and efficiently.
Players will have full access to the technology, which may help eliminate processing delays and ensure that players meet NFL deadlines when making multimillion-dollar deals with various teams. The NFLPA cited the Dumervil contract fiasco that resulted in an $8 million loss for Denver Broncos player when his agent Marty Magid submitted his restructured contract minutes past the deadline, forcing Dumervil to become a free agent.
While Dumervil has not filed a lawsuit against his agent, he did fire Magid and has since agreed to a contract with the Baltimore Ravens. Access to a fax machine played a role in the disaster, as Magid had to search for a FedEx/Kinkos to review and fax the paperwork quickly.
Given that contract deadlines carry significant implications for players under sports law, the NFLPA said the technology may ensure that players and the league avoid these types of costly mishaps in the future. Players will be able to submit their documents via a mobile device, which can eliminate the hassle of trying to find a computer or other portal.
“Our mission is to support our membership on and off the field in the business of football, and DocuSign provides players an important member benefit,” said George Atallah, assistant executive director of External Affairs for the NFLPA. “With the amount of travel our players do, DocuSign adds value by enabling them to sign anything, anywhere.”
